SOLEIL LEVANTE

Packaging Design

Art Direction: Paul Sheriff

Made For: Tyler School of Art and Architecture

Soleil Levante is an artisanal brandy straight from 1920s France. Taking inspiration from the elegant art deco period, the design emphasizes the richness and expensive taste of the sweet liquor.

Branding Direction

Whenever I think of anything fancy or elegant, my mind instantly jumps to the art deco period. The time period itself was supposed to represent glamour and luxury, something that’s also associated with brandy. Both brandy and art deco originate in France so this was the perfect opportunity to go in this direction.

Previous Designs

One challenge that I came across in choosing the art deco period to reference is that the time period is heavily associated with the Great Gatsby. Early on I had to make sure to come up with a design that stayed away from that look. My first attempt was more modern than what it needed to be while my second seemed too architectural. Noticing these mistakes lead me into a more refined direction that just needed some minor changes.
